Tanaab. A land of fertile beauty, of never-ending forests, and a place for
children to grow up free from any harm. Any harm, that was, until the pirates
showed up. The pirates, with all their fighting, looting, and mayhem, had
brought fear into the people who once felt Tanaab to be a safe haven from all
the scum and villinery in the world.

"Wesley! Wesley, where are you?!" A young mother ran through the forest,
looking for her son. Beside her ran a young girl, maybe 5 in age.

"Wes!" the little girl cried.

The mother and child ran through the forest, and behind them, the sun was
starting to set. Looking around in horror, the mother picked up her daughter
and ran to a cabin they had on the outskirts of the woods.

By the door, a young boy sat, a frog-like creature in his hands. "Look Mom, I
caught a frug!"

The mother ran to her son and picked him up into a hard hug. "Wesley, never
run off into the forest this late again! You had me worried sick."

Wesley Janson struggled out of his mother’s grip and got back on the ground.
His frug had jumped out of his hands while she had been hugging him, and now
it was hopping back into the woods. "Mom," Wes stated. "I’m 12 years old. I
know to be home by dark. Why can’t I go off and play?"

Wes’ mother grabbed his hand and pulled both him and his sister into the
house. "Because of the pirates, dear. I don’t want you getting hurt, and
until your father returns from his trip, we have to stay safe."

They went inside the house, where the children had dinner, then went to bed.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Wes waited until he was sure that his mother was fast asleep, then he snuck
out of his window and went into the forest, looking for his frug. After
awhile, fog rolled into the woods, and the little Janson boy found himself
lost. He looked around, and he couldn’t see any tree, ground, or animal.
Finally, realizing that he could only get more lost, Wes found a hard object,
he thought it was a tree, and climbed to the top of it. There, like he had
done many nights before, he curled up and went to sleep. When he woke up in
the morning, he would find his way home.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Pikachu, where are you?"

Ash Catchum ran around the forest, desperately in search of his little yellow
mouse pokemon. Behind him, his two friends Brock and Misty followed. They
looked under every rock and behind every bush, but there was no sign of
Pikachu.

"Maybe he went for a quick run," Brock suggested. "You have been letting him
ride on your shoulder a lot lately. Maybe he just wanted to work out."

"But why wouldn’t he tell me?" Ash asked. "You don’t think… Team Rocket took
him?"

"Nah, we didn’t hear their motto," Misty said.

"Right. But where could he be?"

"Pikapi! Pikapi!"

The three young travelers looked up into the tree. Sitting on a branch was
Pikachu, and there was something curled up next to him.

"What’s that?" Ash asked.

"I don’t know," Brock replied. "Maybe a new pokemon?"

Ash pulls out his pokedex and aims it at the thing that Pikachu was standing
near.

Not enough information available. This may be a newly discovered pokemon.

"Well, I’m going to go and capture it!" Ash started to climb the tree,
getting to the branch that Pikachu was waiting for him on.

"Be careful!" Misty called out.

Ash sat on the branch and pulled out a pokeball. "GO pokeball!" Ash shouted,
and threw the pokeball at the new creature.

"OW!"

Ash and Pikachu jumped at the scream and they both fell from the tree branch.
Sitting up, Wes rubbed the spot on his head where the pokeball had hit him.
"Wha’d’ya you that for?"

"You’re not a pokemon," Misty stated.

Wes jumped down from the tree and landed a few feet away from the group of
friends. "What’s a pokemon?"

"You’ve never heard of pokemon?" Brock asked.

Wes shook his head, then looked down at Pikachu, who was sniffing his shoe.
"Aw, what a cute little mouse."

"Pika?" Pikachu looked up at Wes knelt down, holding his hand out to pet him.
Scrunching his cheeks up, Pikachu let a jolt of electricity fly out at Wes,
engulfing his whole body.

"Stop it, ow ow ow, stop!"

"Pikachu, stop!" Ash shouted.

Pikachu stopped, and Wes fell to the ground in pain.

"What kind of mouse is that?" Wes asked, smoke coming from his mouth.

"It’s a Pikachu," Misty replied, going to help Wes to his feet. "An
electronic mouse pokemon."

"You’ve never heard of a Pikachu?" Ash asked, going over and letting Pikachu
jump onto his shoulder.

"Should I have?" Wes replied. "I usually try and catch womp-rats and frugs.
And never has one tried to electrocute me."

"Just where exactly are you from, kid?" Brock asked.

"Tanaab."

Misty, Brock and Ash exchanged glances. "Where’s that?"

"Outer rim. Farm planet."

"Well, I’m Ash Catchum from Pallet Town," Ash said, holding out his hand.
"And these are my friends, Brock and Misty."

"Hi," Brock and Misty replied.

"And this is my pal, Pikachu."

"Pikapi," Pikachu said, holding out its little paw.

"No offense, Pikachu, but I’ll just wave. And I’m Wes Janson. Nice to meet
you."

"Well, Wes, we’re making our way back to my town for a vacation. Would you
like to come along?" Ash asked.

"I really should be finding my way back home," Wes stated, looking around the
forest. "My mom is going to be worried."

"Well, which way is Tanaab Town?" Misty asked. "I never heard of it, but if
you take us, we’ll walk with you."

"I don’t know where it is… I got lost." Wes suddenly felt very young, and
very scared. He felt like he had stepped into another world.

"Then come back with us," Ash said. "You can talk to Professor Oak. I’m sure
he will be able to help you get home. And you can use our phone to call your
mom and let her know you’re OK."

Phone, Wes wondered. These people are really strange, but I don’t have that
much of a choice. At least I know that I will be safe with them. "Sure," Wes
said. "And you can teach me about pogiman."

"Pokemon," Ash replied. "Well, pokemon are…"

The four friends started to walk down the path to Pallet Town.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When they reached Pallet Town, Ash took his new friend to Professor Oak’s
lab. "Professor!" Ash called out.
Professor Oak came out from his office, the pokemon Muk attached to his
shoulder. "Ash, just who I needed to see. You need to take your Muk with you
so it stops kissing me."
Ask laughed and went over to pet his purple Muk. Wes stared on in amazement.
Professor Oak finally noticed him and went to speak with him. "And how are
you today, young man?"
"Oh, Professor, this is my new friend, Wes. He’s from Tanaab Town, and can’t
find his way back. Can you help him?"
"Tanaab town, eh? I don’t think I’ve ever heard of that before." Professor
Oak went to his computer and typed in TANAAB, but no entry came back. "There
is no city or town named Tanaab on my maps."
Wes bit his lower lip. "I have to get home! My mom is going to be mad."
"Well, he could travel with us," Brock suggested. "Ash wants to go explore
the Islands, so maybe someone there will know where Tanaab is."
"And I can teach you to be a Pokemon Master as we travel!" Ash stated.
"Pikachu!" said Pikachu, jumping onto Wes’ shoulder and hugging his head.
"Great, another boy," Misty said. "When are we going to get another girl in
our group?"
"You could always go back to your gym and leave us alone," Ash stated.
"And let you make a fool of yourself?" Misty said. "Not a chance. Plus,
Togepi would miss Pikachu."
"Pika?"
"Toga brrrrrie!" Togepi smiled and waved its hands in the air.
"So, will you join us?" Ash asked Wes.
"As long as we find my mom, I’ll do anything!"
Professor Oak smiled and clapped his hands. "Good. And to start you off, I’ll
give you your very first Pokemon, Wes. Do you know the difference of the
beginner pokemon?"
Wes shook his head as Professor Oak walked him into the Poke-lab. Sitting on
the table was three pokeballs. "Inside each of these is a different pokemon.
Squirtle, the water turtle pokemon, Charmander, the fire dragon pokemon, and
Bulbasaur, the grass frog-like pokemon. Each one is perfect for beginning
trainers, and all three have very different attacks. Which one would you
like?"
"Go for Squirtle," Misty said. "Water pokemon are strong and cute, and evolve
faster."
"Charmander can grow up to be very powerful, and he can fight against any
cute water pokemon any day," Brock stated.
"What about Bulbasaur?" Wes turned to look at Ash.
"All three are very good. I have them all, and each one is very special to
me. But Pikachu is my favorite, and he was my first."
"Well, do you know what you want?" Professor Oak asked.
"I’ll take Bulbasaur."
"Good choice," Professor Oak said as he handed Wes the pokeball and two empty
ones. "Now have fun and enjoy your adventure. And when you finally get home,
let me know how you are doing, and maybe I can take a vacation there."
"Sure thing, Professor," Wes said, and the four friends left.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After a quick stop to Ash’s house so he could get some new underwear, they
started off on the road to the seashore. Wes held his pokeball in his hand,
turning it around and trying to figure it out. Finally, Ash walked beside
him. "What’s wrong?"

"Where does Bulbasaur stay?"

"Inside the pokeball, of course!" Ash pulled out a pokeball from under his
jacket. "Watch this. Bulbasaur, I choose you!"

Ash’s pokeball flew through the air and landed on the ground. It opened, and
Ash’s Bulbasaur came out. "Bulba."

"Wow!" Wes exclaimed. "You mean I have one of those in this tiny ball?"

"Yes," Ash stated. "All you need to do is call him out."

"Ok… Bulbasaur, I choose you!"

Wes threw his pokeball, and his Bulbasaur came out. The two Bulbasaurs looked
at each other then started to talk, ignoring their masters.

"This is amazing!" Wes stated. "You mean I can catch any animal I want in
these things?"

Ash nodded. He leaned over to Brock while Wes went and examined the
Bulbasaurs more closely. "You’d think this kid never knew a thing about
pokemon before."

"Well, Ash, since the professor never heard of his town, he could live in an
area where pokemon don’t exist, or where they don’t call them pokemon. He
uses the word ‘animal’ a lot. Maybe they are called that where he comes
from."

"Maybe, but there is something really weird about this kid."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
From atop a hill, three people were eyeing the group with binoculars. Two
people, that was, and one Meowth.
"I’ve never seen that twerp with them before," Jessie said.
"Maybe he’s a new kid that they are trying to help train?" James replied.
"Whoever he is, he has yet to learn of Team Rocket and our mission," Meowth
stated. "I say we go and introduce ourselves."
James and Jessie jumped up and hugged each other. "Someone new to listen to
our motto!" Jessie exclaimed.
"How does my hair look?" James asked.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`

"Now, Bulbasaur starts with some very basic attacks," Ash stated. "He has a
Vine Whip, Razor Leaf, and a Tackle attack. He works best against attacking
ground and rock pokemon."

"But why do you want to battle them?" Wes asked, reach down to pet his
Bulbasaur. "No one keeps them as pets?"

Ash shook his head and walked away. He had been trying to teach Wes about
becoming a Pokemon trainer for the better part of the day, but Wes didn’t
seem that interested in it. Misty came over and sat beside Wes and his
Bulbasaur.

"Don’t listen to Ash," Misty said. "If you just want to keep Bulbasaur as a
pet, that’s OK. Many people just keep pokemon as pets."

"I just don’t think you should make them fight."

"Well, the pokemon don’t mind fighting for you," Misty replied. "In fact,
they get some kind of pleasure in knowing that they won. It’s like a game to
everyone."

Wes sighed, then looked down at his Bulbasaur. "Do you want to fight?" Wes
asked.

"Bulba," Bulbasaur replied, nodding.

"Fine, then I’ll try to be a pokemon trainer then."

Wes stood and looked over to where Ash sat with Brock. "I’m ready to learn,
Ash, if you still want to teach me."

Ash looked at Brock, then stood and nodded. As he walked over to where Wes
and Misty stood, suddenly a shadow fell over them.

"To protect the world from devastation."

"To unite all peoples within our nation."

"Oh no," Ash muttered as Team Rocket jumped down from their balloon.

"Don’t interrupt!" Jessie shouted.

"Why can you guys just skip the motto and the fight and just blast off
again?" Ash asked.

Jessie and James glowered at Ash for a moment, then stood up back tall and
proud. "We haven’t introduced ourselves to your new little friend, twerp."

Ash lowered his head. "Wes, Team Rocket. Team Rocket, Wes. NOW that you are
introduced…"

"You need to add some style to your introductions!" James stated. "Watch and
learn."

Jessie and James motioned up to Meowth, who started a bunch of fireworks in
the air.

"To protect the world from devastation."

"To unite all peoples within our nation."

"The denounce the evils of truth and love."

"To extend our reach to the stars above."

"Jessie."

"James."

"Team Rocket blasts off at the speed of light."

"Surrender now or prepare to fight."

Meowth jumped out from balloon and landed in front of the two Rockets and a
final large fireworks display went off behind them. "Meowth, that’s right!"

Wes applauds Team Rocket, and James and Jessie look at him astonished.
Finally, they start to bow. Ash and Brock look at Wes in shock, and elbow
him. "They are the bad guys," Ash whispered.

"Oh," Wes states, hiding his hands. "Sorry."

"Hand over all your pokemon," James stated.

"Especially that Pikachu!’ Meowth added.

"Wow, a talking cat," Wes stated, and got onto his knees. "Here kitty, kitty,
kitty!"

Meowth gave Wes a strange look. "What planet are you from, kid?’ he asked.

"Tanaab," Wes replied. "Do you know where it is?"

"Don’t ask them," Brock said. "They don’t know anything!"

"That’s not true!" Jessie said. "I know a lot of things."

"Oh yeah," Misty said. "How do you spell supercalifragilisticexpialidocious?"

Jessie looked to James for support, but he just shrugged his shoulders. "Oh,
what does that matter anyways? I know something that you don’t know!"

"Oh yeah, what’s that?" Ash asked.

"There’s a jigglypuff behind you. It’s been following you since the Orange
Islands."

Ash scoffed. "I don’t believe that."

"It’s true!" James said, his face starting to show some terror.

Brock turned, and there stood Jigglypuff, smiling. It held up it’s microphone
to start to sing. "OH NO!" Ash, Misty and Brock cried out.

"Jigg-a-lee-puff, Jigg a lee, Jigg a lee. Jigg-a-lee-puff, Jigg a lee,"
Jigglypuff started to sing its song.

"Not again," Ash said, his eyelids getting heavy.

"Don’t fall asleep," Misty said as her eyelids closed.

"Zzzzzz," Brock snored.

Wes looked around and saw Ash, Brock, Misty, Togepi, Pikachu, both Ash’s and
his Bulbasaur and James fall asleep. Jessie looked at James and slapped him
awake. "You forgot to put in your earplugs!" she shouted.

Jigglypuff finished singing and its face got puffed up as it took the cap off
its microphone. With its marker, it drew all over Ash, Misty and Brock. James
woke up before it could hit him. Jigglypuff then turned to Wes.

"That was beautiful," Wes told the little balloon pokemon.

Jigglypuff didn’t know what to say. No one had ever stayed awake during its
song. So it smiled and went over to hug Wes.

Meowth walked over to Wes as he pulled out his earplugs. "Kid, how’d you do
that?"

"Do what?" Wes asked, putting Jigglypuff back on the ground.

"Stay awake through a jigglypuff song! No one can do that unless the are deaf
or got earplugs."

"I dunno," Wes stated. "I’ve never seen a Jigglypuff before."

Jessie had finally gotten James awake, and they knelt down beside Pikachu.
James pulled out a rubber container and put Pikachu inside it. Wes noticed
this and stood up. "Hey, that Pikachu is Ash’s."

James held the box and nodded. "And we’re going to –"

"Bring him back to his real owner," Jessie finished, placing a hand over
James’ mouth. "You see, Ash stole Pikachu from our boss, and we’ve been
trying to get him back ever since."

"Yeah, cause he’s brainwashed Pikachu and stuff," James said.

Wes shook his head. "But they don’t seem that mean."

Meowth put his arm around Wes’ knee. "I know, it sounds so weird, but it’s
true."

Wes looked at the three unconscious people who he had thought were his
friends. "What am I going to do now?" Wes asked. "I don’t know my way home,
and my mom’s going to get worried."

"Well," Meowth said, "Our boss might now how to get you home, and if not, you
could team up with us. We travel a lot, and we might one day find your way
home."

Jessie grabbed Meowth and pulled him away from Wes. "What are you doing?" she
hissed. "We don’t need one of those twerps following us around!"

"This kid’s different from those other three twerps," Meowth said. "He’d
make a good Rocket. He withstood a Jigglypuff song!"

"Well…" Jessie mummered.

"And I kinda like him," Meowth said. "I’m sure the boss will find use for
him."

James walked over to them, Pikachu still fast asleep. "We had better get
going, before they wake up."

Jessie turned to Wes. "Come on," she said. "We’ll take care of you."

Wes nodded. "What about my Bulbasaur?"

"Call him back," James said.

"I don’t know how."

Meowth walked over and motioned to a pokeball at Wes’ hip. "Just say,
‘Bulbasaur, return’," Meowth told him.

Wes pulled out the pokeball and held it out. "Bulbasaur, return!"

A red beam came out of the pokeball and engulfed one of the Bulbasaurs, and
it disappeared. Wes felt the ball get heavier. "Radical!"

James and Jessie were climbing into their balloon as Meowth and Wes started
to walk over to them. Suddenly, Wes felt a tugging at his leg. He looked down
and saw Jigglypuff there. "Jiggly, jigglypuff!"

"What does it want?" Wes asked Meowth.

"It wants to come with us," Meowth said. "I think it likes you."

"Just catch it and let’s go!" Jessie yelled from the balloon.

Wes knelt down and held out one of his empty balls to Jigglypuff. It smiled,
then walked over and touched the ball. The red beam came out and engulfed the
little balloon pokemon, then it disappeared inside.

"Come on!" James called.

Wes and Meowth ran to the big hot-air balloon and jumped into the basket.
They took off, flying away from the sleeping trio.
