Game Master Rulings

Has your character been treated unfairly? Did you witness an action by another player that did not make logical sense or could not possibly have happened? If you want a post voided or situation replayed then this is your course of action.

Make sure there is a problem. No one likes it when their character's things are stolen or (s)he gets wounded, but just because these things happen, there may not be cause for a ruling. Read the Rules, look into Star Wars lore, and perhaps ask a few friends if they agree that the move made against you was unfair / impossible. Some things are obviously against canon Star Wars, some more minute such as your right to turn-based combat.

Try to resolve the problem without outside moderation. Can you and the other player(s) involved reach an agreement that a situation was unfair and decide to redo it? Try writing an e-mail to the person and calmly explaining the problem and see what result you get. Try to keep in mind that a post that you do not agree with does not necessarily signify a personal vendetta against you or your character. People make mistakes. For all you know, the post was written at 1am before the player dropped, exhausted, into bed. Be calm and reasonable when writing this e-mail. If necessary, take a break from the computer and clear your mind of any initial anger. Consider the following two e-mails explaining a ficional problem:

Jill, THERE IS NO WAY IN HECK you could have done that to my character! GOD MODER!! I am soooooo much stronger than you and smarter too, just look at our profiles. You cannot get away with this, I've already e-mailed the GMs. You'll have to take it back. And this time I'll clobbered YOU on the head instead. HA HA HA!

Dear Jill,
I was reading your last post and I don't think there is any way that your character could have managed to take out mine so easily. After looking at both our profiles, the size and skills you listed don't show any indication that it would be possible for her to do it. I also think you needed to give me time to react IC instead of posting the entire fight scene yourself. Can we void your post and start the battle over, taking turns after each hit?

Which would you respond better to? Which please would make you more likely to accept the offer and redo the post? Most people automatically go into the defensive mode when sent a mail like the first one, and will then be nearly impossible to get through to later if you start off this way. It is best to be polite and reasonably present the problem.

If that fails, e-mail your complaint to a Councilor and CC it to the person you're talking about. Be mature about this. If you have something to say against the other person that he or she cannot hear, then the RPG Council does not need to hear it either. Describe the situation in detail and what you feel is unfair about it. If possible, send copies of the problem posts or post numbers for the Yahoo! Archive. Along with the complaint you can also send any type of evidence that supports your case, such as fwds of the first exchange of e-mails, links to web sites supporting your views, names of books or comics, etc. The Councilor you contact will forward the information to the entire RPG Council.

The RPG Council will put your SL on pause and consider the evidence. This means that no one even remotely interacting with your SL can continue to post until a ruling is made. If you are in a barfight, for example, no other characters in the bar can post, because the events and outcome of the fight might affect them. During the pause the RPG Council will discuss the SL situation, the information in the Character Database, and any additional evidence sent.

If the complaint is against a Councilor character, or asked for by a Councilor concerning one of her characters the information should be sent to a Councilor uninvolved in the SL, and the RPG Council will look at the evidence and exclude the Councilor in question from the discussion so that no unfair advantage results.

When they have come to a decision it will be posted to the list and the SL will unpause. Depending on their decision, the game may resume where it was paused, or some posts may be voided. Specific instructions will be given in the ruling.
