Nato nell'agosto del 1951, è cresciuta in California con sua sorella (Maria) e il fratello (Ed). Ha ottenuto un Master in Storia Medievale presso l'Università di California, e ha una cintura nera di karate Shotokan. Ha sposato George Alec Effinger nel 1998 e ora vive a Los Angeles. I suoi hobby sono la danza, la pittura, storiche e costumi fantasy, lettura tarocchi e l'incontro occasionale di carpenteria. I suoi animali sono gatti, lucertole e pechinesi.
