Cliff's Edge

by Padawan Filorux

It was cold, so cold.

Obi-Wan pulled his cloak tighter around him as he stood in the night, amidst the howling of the wind.

The twin moons were pale. Dimming as the dark clouds loomed closer to those glimmering orbs. Like the mist clouding his blue eyes.

He was standing at the edge of a cliff. Beneath, there was a sea, black and tumbling; like hungry black dogs, lunging at their preys with white, foaming fangs, tearing the cliff face one piece at a time. The Cydrans call it the Demon sea, so very much like it appeared.

Breathing deeply at the fresh ocean air, it smelt nice, salty yet sweet. Obi-Wan took another breath, it smelt of the variety of sea creatures. He took another, this time, it smelt of life and death; happiness and sadness; joy and pain.

Obi-Wan stared at the ghostly glint of the waves, and stared at it for a long while. He wanted to memorize its beauty, its mystery, its liveliness, its joy. He wanted to remember all the best thing of his life before he shall disappear from this world forever.

He remembered the first time he arrived at the Jedi Temple. It was almost 17 years ago, when he was only one. Yet, he remembered it as clear as ever. Far to come, far to go it is. Cold and warm it is. Seek what you are looking for, you will. Find it here you shall. Listen. This was exactly what Yoda said to him all those year ago. He could almost still hear the way the little Master emphasised on the last word. Listen. Obi-Wan closed his eyes and listened. He heard the wind howling like hungry dogs of the Demon sea; The slapping of waves against rocks; the way his robe rustled from the ocean currents. Find it here you shall. Have he found it? What have he been looking for all along? He had wanted to become a Jedi Knight. Yes, he had wanted it so much, and worked so hard for it. Yet, he's just going to throw his life away? What for? He know what for. He know it as clear as ever. Force how he wished that he don't, how he wished that he could just forget and get on with life?

No. He could never forget.

Never forget.

The terrible memories gushed through the small opening and filled his mind with unwanted feelings and images. Obi-Wan doubled-over as if in terrible physical pain and let out a gut-wrenching cry against the ocean. Golden lightning split the night sky like shattered glass and silvering strings darted from heaven and poured down onto the mortal soil, beating against the hard rocks and dark ocean. The black dogs attacked in greater strength and fury, as if challenging the rain in their own strange competition. The rain soaked through Obi-Wan's hair and cloak, staining them into a darker shade.

A strange figure shimmered amidst the rain under the flashing lightning, seemingly to approach the cliff edge in silent ghostly steps. As if sensing the man's approach, Obi-Wan turned around, his eyes glaring fury fires that even cold harsh winds and rain failed to diminish.

"Why did you come back? Why must you come here?" He shouted at the figure through a mist created by rain.

"Why did you do it? Why did you betray us?" the figure was silent, it's steps slow and steady.

"Did you know how much you hurt me? Did you know how much it hurts?"

"All those years, I thought you cared for me! Loved me. But it's all lie! All deception!" The rain splatter and the wind shrieked.

"All those years. How could you be so cruel?" Tears poured down the young man's face, mixing with the rain, flowing like streams.

"I gave you everything. But you never gave me anything in return!" The man walked closer, each step seemed to weigh a ton.

"You never loved me, did you? You never cared for me! You are just using me all along! You don't give a damn about me!" The man now stands face to face with the young man. The huge cloak he wore cast shadow on his leonine features.

"Why are you so silent? You left me, why did you come back?" Obi-Wan's voice shook, his face was white as the cold ebbed into his skin.

"I hate you. I hate you!" The young man screamed at him. Rumbling thunder underlaid his words, booming them out for the whole world to hear.

Obi-Wan reached inside his tunic and drew out a small, round, ebony stone, streaked with beautiful crimson streaks in the shape of lightning bolts. He threw it hard at the older man. The small stone bounced off the man's thick cloak and fell onto the ground between them with a small 'thump' barely audible amidst the rain. Lightning flashed, then, the sky darkened.

When the lightning split the sky once again, lighting up the dark world, the young man was on the cliff no longer. The older man stood alone, staring down at the dark ocean around him. The demon dogs howled in the night, sinking its fangs into a small circle beside the cliff face, it's deep blackness drowning life, pain, and sadness.

On the cliff, the man glanced across the ocean, his eyes settling on the remerging moon. The line along his solitary figure began to grow faint; its cold, hard lines seem to fade with the thinning rain. When the last drop of heaven's tears had sank into the mortal soil, the man was there no longer.

The small round ebony stony, faintly glowing with the signature of the Force, held a lifetime of story.

Now I will tell you what I've done for you
Fifty thousand tears I've cried
Screaming deceiving and bleeding for you
And you still wont hear me
I'm going under

The End
