Book 8 - 'Isard's Revenge' by Michael A. Stackpole

Bantam Press 1999

Set 5 years after RotJ

book cover
Story -- the continuing adventures of Wedge Antilles' Rogue Squadron. The book opens during the battle over the Bilbringi shipyards at the end of Zahn's 'Thrawn trilogy'. Corran is still feeling guilty that he hasn't yet rescued the Lusankya prisoners. Then an old adversary shows up (go on, guess who), along with a ruthless new one...

Original characters from the movies -- just Wedge and Admiral Ackbar. Leia and Mon Mothma get the odd line.

New characters -- the usual crowd. Booster Terrik, Mirax, Iella, Airen Cracken and Talon Karrde (briefly). And, yes, Isard is back (like the title didn't give it away).

Cover art -- a couple of AT-AT walkers and a bunch of X-wings

Chicks -- 3 out of the 13 Rogues are female; as is the main baddie (Isard); Iella and Mirax go on a mission together and do a spot of bonding.

Any good? -- the action is pretty good (in the air and on the ground) and, as we expect from Stackpole, the character stuff is great. There's some really nice Corran/Mirax and Gavin/Asyr relationship moments; Borsk Fey'lya is his usual slimy self; and even the droids get a look in - Whistler and Gate are on a mission!

Read it? -- yes - thoroughly recommended

Rating -- 8 out of 10
