Characterisations -- still good, particularly the pilots and Han. And Artoo and Threepio get a little adventure - wahoo!
New characters -- Czulkang Lah and Harrar are back. And if you're wondering whatever happened to Wes Janson, look no further... :)
Cover art -- (by Dave Seeley) Han and Leia in the Falcon - where they belong. Nice pic!
Chicks -- ambassador Leia shows once more why she was in charge of the Rebellion for so long. Jaina is 19 and, IMO, becoming more like her mother and grandmother with every book - but not so much as to yell 'cliche' at the reader. I liked Mara's characterisation (more like the butt-kicking, sarcastic Mara of old) and was delighted to see Tahiri getting some character development.
Any good? -- I like Allston's style - mostly. Enough action to get the heart pounding, but not so much that you feel dizzy and have to reread 'cos you've forgotten who's doing what to whom. And plenty of snappy dialogue that you can 'hear' the characters saying. BUT - some of the plot ideas about the Force 'n' stuff struck me as a little weird (I won't say exactly what, as I try to avoid spoilers) and I'm beginning to wonder exactly how much of this story arc has been 'checked' by LucasBooks. However, I do try to keep my mind open - after all, George gave us 'midichlorians', so who are we to point and laugh... :)
Read it? -- yeah. Especially Han & Leia fans, and pilot fans. *thinks* Actually, there's probably something for everyone in this book. How did he fit so much into a wee paperback? An upbeat book that still has the 'darkness' of the NJO.
Rating -- 7 out of 10
