Born in 1944, in Sterling, Illinois. He has a degree in English Literature from Hamilton College, New York, and a law degree from Washington & Lee University, Virginia. He practiced law for many years, only giving it up in 1986 to write full-time. He is also a co-founder of Del Rey Books. He now lives in Seattle with his wife Judine - they have a second home in Hawaii, where he is active with the Maui Writers Conference.
